Other fall sports get going sooner, but none of them get folks in this area going quite like high school football. And one month from tonight, Aug. 29, will be opening night for the 2008 season.
If that seems like a long time to wait, it is. The combination of pushing the schedule back and having Labor Day weekend fall on the earliest possible dates makes this the latest opening date since I’ve been following the game, and probably for some time before that.
The end dates are late, too, with the state finals set for Dec. 12-13. But that’s 4 1/2 months and 60 or so degrees away from the here and now, so let’s go back to the beginning. Here are the opening games for the six area teams:
- Friday, Aug. 29: Bell County vs. Garrard County at Lincoln County; Washington County at Lincoln County; Casey County vs. Trimble County at Henry County;
- Saturday, Aug. 30: Russell County at Danville; Madison Central vs. Mercer County at Danville; Boyle County vs. Warren Central at Bowling Green.
And here’s something else to tide you over. The comprehensive football previews at Bluegrasspreps.com is now free and available to all. BGP is a subscription site featuring forums that are rich with interesting discussion and information (especially about football), but the fee is minimal and many members say the preview alone is worth that cost. The preview is written largely by BGP members, broken down by class and includes at least a little something on every single team in the state, and it can be accessed from here.
