All-state football roundup

Damir Karapandzic of Danville and Trey Yeager of Boyle County were named to all-state football teams that have been announced in the past few days.

Karapandzic, a kicker, was voted to The Associated Press All-State first team released last week. Yeager was voted to The Courier-Journal All-State first team released earlier this week as a defensive lineman.

Karapandzic was the only player from an Advocate-area school recognized on the AP team. None were voted to the second team or received honorable mention. (Last year’s AP voting recognized six local players.)

In addition to Yeager, eight other local players were recognized in The Courier-Journal voting:

  • Second team offense — Michael Jones, Danville, lineman; Blake Mason, Boyle County, tight end; Andrew Wilks, Lincoln County, lineman.
  • Second team defense — Garrett Caudill, Garrard County, linebacker.
  • Honorable mention offense — Alex Bolin, Casey County, running back; Damir Karapandzic, Danville, kicker; Tyler Padgett, Casey County, lineman.
  • Honorable mention defense — Jordan Elery, Mercer County, linebacker.

The AP team is selected through balloting of AP member sports writers and sportscasters across Kentucky. The Courier-Journal team is chosen through balloting of coaches statewide.

The Lexington Herald-Leader’s Class of the Commonwealth, a list of 22 top seniors statewide, did not include any area players. The only major team still unannounced is the all-Bluegrasspreps.com team, expected to be released later this month.

Mercer, Burgin girls tournaments ahead

(UPDATE: Tates Creek has replaced Union County in the Mercer County girls tournament field. Union was unable to make the trip today due to the winter storm that dumped snow on western Kentucky; Tates Creek agreed this morning to be a last-second replacement.)

Two more Advocate-area holiday tournaments remain this week, both girls tournaments and both in the same county. When I posted the holiday schedules last week, we did not have the schedule for the tournament at Burgin, a new eight-team invitational open to schools eligible for the All “A” Classic, but now we do. Monticello, Wayne school districts on verge of merger

This is much more than a sports issue, especially to those who have jobs on the line or kids in the affected schools, but it’s worth noting here that the landscape of 12th Region sports is about to change with the impending merger of the Monticello and Wayne County school districts.

The Monticello school board voted Tuesday to merge with Wayne County schools for the 2013-14 school year, WKYT-TV in Lexington reported today. It was only the day before that the Monticello board voted to request state management for its financially strapped school system and began preliminary discussions about a merger, according to the Wayne County Outlook, and the board voted 3-2 for the merger on Tuesday.

On the sports front, that would leave the 48th District with three teams — Wayne, McCreary Central and Southwestern — for basketball, baseball, soccer, softball and volleyball unless and until the KHSAA moves another team into the district or completes a larger realignment plan.

Harp resigns as Danville football coach

Danville is in the market for a new football coach. That hasn’t happened since 1988, when Ronald Reagan’s presidency was winding down, Adele was born and a gallon of gas sold for 91 cents.

Sam Harp, who coached the Admirals to 276 wins and seven state championships in 25 seasons, is leaving Danville to become the coach at Lebanon (Tenn.). His introduction today as Lebanon’s coach came as a shock in Danville and around the state.

It’s fair to say that few men have left as much of an imprint on high school football, not only in Danville but across Kentucky, as Harp has in a quarter-century of success here. He attained a level of success that only a handful of coaches can claim, and he worked behind the scenes in KHSAA committees and meetings of coaches and athletic directors to better the game.

It’s also fair to say that Danville football will never be the same when he’s gone. The school should be able to replace Harp with a quality coach, but coaches who can do what he has done over a long period of time don’t just grow on trees.

There will be plenty of time in the coming weeks and months to talk about where Danville football is headed. Now is the time to look back at where it has been over the last 25 years and to tip our caps to a coach whose likes we may not see again.

Local holiday tournament schedules

The Mercer County boys and girls, the Danville girls and the Burgin girls are hosting holiday tournaments this season.

Mercer’s 16-team boys tournament, which begins Thursday, is the largest and deepest of the bunch. The field includes one defending regional champion (Johnson Central, 15th Region) and three regional runners-up from last season (Warren Central, 4th; Bardstown, 5th; Boyle County, 12th). Danville’s eight-team girls tournament also opens Thursday, and Mercer’s girls tournament, which is next week has been trimmed from 16 teams to eight this year. Finally, Burgin will host an eight-team girls tourney next week exclusively for schools eligible for the All “A” Classic.

Here is the schedule for holiday tournaments to be played locally. The preceding post details where all of the Advocate-area teams are headed for holiday tournaments.
