Mid-district week

There are precious few surprises to be found in the fields for the boys and girls 12th Region Tournaments, which are now full after the completion of semifinal play tonight. The top two seeds advanced to district finals (and therefore to the regionals) in five of the eight district tournaments, and No. 3 seeds replaced No. 2s in the other three.

It may have been a shock to the system to see the two-time defending regional champion West Jessamine boys go down in the 46th District semifinals, but it wasn’t a true shocker. The Colts were a shadow of their former selves, finishing seven games under .500 at 11-18. I’m willing to bet they’ll be winning again soon, but graduation — and specifically the graduation of Jarrod Polson — simply hit them too hard this year.

Of the three No. 3 seeds, the only one that looks surprising on paper is the Garrard County girls, who lost twice to Danville in the regular season but won their meeting Tuesday in the 45th District semis. It was no major upset, though, just a case of a team getting it right at the right time, which just happened to be the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s game.

The other No. 3 seeds, the Burgin girls and Rockcastle County boys, won rubber-match games after regular-season splits with East Jessamine and Casey County, respectively.

Here’s the full list of qualifiers for next week’s 12th Region Tournaments, listed in order of their district seeds:

  • 45th District: Lincoln County (15-14), Danville (18-9)
  • 46th District: East Jessamine (22-6), Mercer County (20-8)
  • 47th District: Pulaski County (24-6), Rockcastle County (7-21)
  • 48th District: Wayne County (27-3), Southwestern (13-16)

  • 45th District: Lincoln County (21-6), Garrard County (15-7)
  • 46th District: Mercer County (19-8), Burgin (11-14)
  • 47th District: Rockcastle County (28-1), Casey County (23-5)
  • 48th District: Southwestern (22-7), Wayne County (16-12)

These are the repeat teams from last year’s regionals: the Danville, Mercer, Pulaski and Wayne boys; and the Casey, Garrard, Lincoln, Mercer, Rockcastle and Southwestern girls.

All four girls district finals within the region will be played Thursday; all four boys district finals are Friday.

The girls regional begins Monday at Pulaski County; the boys regional begins Wednesday at Lincoln County. The pairings for both will be drawn Saturday. Check back here Saturday afternoon for the results of those draws.
