The 12th Region champion Lady Rockets trailed 46-40 with 2:00 left in the third quarter but drew even less than 3 minutes later and led 52-49 before Madison Central tied the game with 2:18 to go. Angie Lawrence sank a jumper in the paint to give Rockcastle the lead with 40 seconds left, and Madison Central missed three 3-point shots for the lead and a tip-in that would have tied the game before Michaela Hunter made one of two free throws for the Lady Rockets at :04. The Lady Indians didn’t get a shot off after Hunter missed her second attempt.
Rockcastle committed only seven turnovers but was outrebounded 32-29 and missed 10 of its 24 free throws. Sara Hammond led the Lady Rockets with 23 points and 12 rebounds, Shanlee Burton had 11 points and Lawrence had 10 points.
Rockcastle will play the winner of tonight’s Clay County-Owensboro Catholic game in its quarterfinal game at 9 p.m. Friday.
