Dunagan, Woods win boys regional awards
Gavin Dunagan and Rodney Woods of Wayne County have been voted the 12th Region boys player and coach of the year by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches.
Dunagan was an easy choice, as he is Wayne’s all-time leader in points and rebounds after six years on the Cardinals’ varsity squad. The 6-4 forward, who is unsigned, enters the state tournament averaging 18.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
Woods, who has been the dean of 12th Region coaches for some time now, won his seventh regional title and Wayne’s eighth overall. His Cardinals will make their first Boys Sweet Sixteen appearance since 2004 when they play Perry County Central on Thursday.
Dunagan and Woods will receive their awards Friday at the tournament, along with the other regional winners. Click here for the full list.
Dunagan and Clay Cinnamon of Mercer County, the runner-up for the regional player of the year award, were also chosen as the 12th Region’s two representatives for the KABC East-West all-star game, which will be played at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Transylvania University’s Beck Center. Of course, Dunagan won’t play in that game if Wayne makes a deep Sweet Sixteen run.
