Wayne, the 12th Region champion, shot just 28 percent from the field and was unable to make a run at Rowan after the Vikings scored 12 straight points late in the first quarter and early in the second. The Cardinals missed seven straight shots from the field during that run, which gave Rowan a 21-8 lead, and were 2 for 14 midway through the second quarter. The Vikings then used a 15-2 run that lasted only 2:05 to take a 45-22 lead in the third quarter and essentially finish Wayne off.
The Cardinals were actually better from 3-point range (8 for 26) than inside the line (7 for 28). They were also outrebounded 40-30.
Gavin Dunagan closed his stellar career at Wayne with only six points, while Austin Shearer, who also had an outstanding career, scored only nine. Both were 2 for 13 from the field. Reserve Kyle Gehring led the Cardinals with 11 points in 16 minutes.
Former Somerset coach Shawn Thacker led Rowan to its first Sweet Sixteen win in the first round Thursday, and now the Vikings are in the final four. They’ll play Bullitt East on Saturday for a spot in the title game against the Eastern-Christian County winner.
