Following the football finals

For the first time in three years and the third time in five years, there are no local teams in the state football finals. Yet somehow they’ll managed to hold the games just the same today and Saturday in Bowling Green.

The best matchup in what could be a parade of blowouts might well be the Class 2A game today between Glasgow and Covington Holy Cross. Every other game has the potential to be one-sided, and several of them probably will be.

There will be great teams on display, including nationally ranked Trinity and powerful squads from Bowling Green and Highlands, but the teams they’ll face probably aren’t on par with them. In some cases, the teams that win this weekend will probably have had better opposition in the semifinals and regional finals than in the finals. Such is life in a watered-down football world.

If you want to keep tabs on the action, this KHSAA web page offers links to live audio and video streams and live statistics from the games, as well as rosters and pregame stats for all 12 participating teams.

In addition, all six games can be heard locally on Lexington-based WVLK-FM (101.5), and two of them will be televised locally on a delayed basis. CWKYT (Ch. 27.2) in Lexington will air the 6A final (Trinity vs. Scott County) at 3 p.m. Saturday and the 5A final (Bowling Green vs. Anderson County) at 4 p.m. Sunday. Stations in Louisville, Bowling Green and Hazard, among others, will air some or all games on a delayed basis as well.

My picks for the weekend:

  • 1A: Mayfield over Hazard.
  • 2A: Glasgow over Covington Holy Cross.
  • 6A: Trinity over Scott County.
  • 3A: Central over Belfry.
  • 4A: Highlands over Franklin-Simpson.
  • 5A: Bowling Green over Anderson County.

Last week: 1-0; season: 59-10 (.855).
