Locked out of Rupp Arena

Five Advocate-area teams that were scheduled to play in a multi-game showcase Sunday at Rupp Arena will instead have the day off.

The teams were scheduled to play in the day-long Kentucky Shootout, one of the events that fell victim to an NCAA ruling that prohibits certain high school games from being played at NCAA member schools’ facilities.

Here are the area games that were part of the event, which has been canceled:

  • Danville vs. Wolfe County
  • Harlan County vs. Mercer County boys
  • Boyle County vs. Harrison County boys
  • Clinton County vs. Mercer County girls

I’m not going to get all preachy about how ridiculous the NCAA ruling is — even though I’d be right. At the same time, I’m not going to get preachy about how I’m not a big fan of playing regular-season games on Sundays, a practice that seems unnecessary and in some places is prohibited by some school districts.

I’ll just say that it is a shame that these local players and the others involved were denied what might be the only chance they would have gotten to play on the biggest basketball stage in Kentucky.
