State football finals set

Make your travel plans now, because the KHSAA has set the schedule for this year’ state football finals. It’s basically the same as last year, except the starting times have been moved up 30 minutes.

Friday, Dec. 12

  • Class 1A, 11 a.m.
  • Class 3A, 3 p.m.
  • Class 5A, 7 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 13

  • Class 2A, 11 a.m.
  • Class 4A, 3 p.m.
  • Class 6A, 7 p.m.

The 11-week regular season begins Aug. 29 and ends Nov. 7, and the first four rounds of the playoffs are Nov. 14, 21 and 28 and Dec. 5.

I didn’t expect the 6A final to be moved off of Saturday night. The crowd might be different this year since Trinity and St. X can’t meet in the finals, but Male is on the opposite side of the bracket, along with the northern Kentucky schools and those from Fayette County.

Personally, I wish it were two games a day for three days, but there doesn’t seem to be much interest in that. The current plan certainly works, though, so there’s no complaint. All in all, I think a good decision by the KHSAA.

Two games a day for three days isn’t going to happen because they aren’t going to use an extra school day if they don’t have to. This format works well enough, except that the deeper into December the games go, the greater the possibility of some pretty chilly night games — or a 4-inch snow.

A dome would really do the trick!
