Burgin coach’s career ends with district defeat
The career of longtime Burgin boys basketball coach Don Irvine ended tonight when his Bulldogs lost to West Jessamine 62-46 in a 46th District Tournament semifinal at Harrodsburg.
Burgin finished at 22-9, making this the winningest season in Irvine’s 21 years and 24 seasons as a head coach at Burgin, Augusta and McLean County. (He coached boys and girls teams simultaneously in three seasons.)
Irvine’s final record is 280-386.
The coach affectionately knows as “The Legend” announced his plans to retire before this season, and while he hasn’t closed the door on returning to basketball down the road, this is good-bye for now to a coach who found his niche at small schools, who has excelled as a teacher of the game and a mentor to countless young men and women and who might be unparalled as a storyteller at any level of coaching.
We’ll miss you, Don.
