The last of the district tournament semifinals were played tonight around the 12th Region, meaning the fields have been filled for the boys and girls 12th Region Tournaments. The Nos. 1 and 2 seeds advanced to district championship games and earned regional berths in five of the eight district tournaments, with No. 3 seeds beating 2s in three cases.
There was one shocker and one surprise among the No. 3 seeds. The shocker came from the girls 47th District, where defending state champion Rockcastle County was bounced by Pulaski County on Tuesday. Rockcastle was up and down all season and finished at .500 (14-14), but the Lady Rockets came into the postseason on a roll with wins in their last five regular-season games.
The surprise comes from the boys 47th District, where Casey County once again won the one that counts, pulling an upset to reach the regional for the third time in four years. The Rebels had won only three games all season, but they defeated Somerset on Tuesday to punch their ticket. Casey didn’t make the regional at all from 1999-2008, and the three teams that have qualified over the last four years have done so with nine wins in 2008-09, eight in 2009-10 and three in 2011-12. Former coach Todd Carman took the Rebels to the regional in two of his four seasons, and now first-year coach Darry Burkett has done it as well.
The other No. 3 seed to advance, the Boyle County boys, lost two two-point decisions to Garrard County in the regular season before winning their third meeting in overtime Monday in the 45th District.
Here’s the full list of regional qualifiers, listed in order of their district seeds:
- 45th District: Lincoln County (19-12), Boyle County (10-15)
- 46th District: East Jessamine (26-4), West Jessamine (18-12)

The Boyle, West Jessamine and Casey boys and the Danville and Pulaski girls were not in last year’s regionals.
Three of the four girls district finals will be played Thursday. The exception is the 45th, which will be played Friday. All four boys finals are also Friday.
The girls regional begins Monday at Lincoln County; the boys regional begins Wednesday at Pulaski County. Pairings for both tournaments will be drawn Saturday, and the results of those draws will be posted here by mid-afternoon Saturday.
