KHSAA creates championship weekend for most fall sports
Championships in most fall sports will be contested on the same weekend beginning in 2013 under a measure approved today by the KHSAA Board of Control.
Champions will be crowned on the same November Saturday in five of the eight fall sports — boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer and volleyball — beginning Nov. 9, 2013. The football and boys and girls golf championships will not be included.
It was only a few years ago that the KHSAA began taking pains to ensure that its championship weekends in each season were staggered whenever possible — for example, volleyball, soccer and cross country championships have been held on consecutive weekends — but KHSAA commissioner Julian Tackett said today in a press release that he thinks this format will work well.
The KHSAA board also approved a standard time for mandatory water breaks in soccer games when those breaks are required when the heat index is at least 95 degrees. The breaks will fall at the 20-minute mark of each half and will last for 10 minutes.
