Longtime Burgin coach Irvine facing former school
It’s not a marquee game in the grand scheme of post-Christmas basketball, but a girls game tonight in Frankfort will have some significance for former Burgin coach Don Irvine.
Irvine ended a brief retirement to take over the Western Hills girls in September, and his new team will host the Burgin girls tonight.
This certainly isn’t the first time the well-traveled Irvine has faced one of his former teams, and it isn’t quite the same as if he were coaching against the Burgin boys he coached just last season. But he is a former Burgin girls coach as well — if only for a couple of seasons — and there’s no doubt that game jumped off the page when Irvine perused his new team’s schedule.
Irvine won his first two games this season at Western Hills, and the Lady Wolverines have already matched their win total from last season, when they went 5-26. They are 5-7 following an 0-3 run in their own holiday tournament last week. Burgin is 8-6.
The Lady Bulldogs won’t be the only area team Irvine sees this season. Western Hills also plays at Danville on Jan. 19 and at Boyle County on Feb. 12.
