Softball gets soaked; baseball stays dry

As if to prove that a forecast of scattered thunderstorms means exactly that, the skies over the 12th Region baseball and softball tournaments were decidedly different Wednesday night.

The softball final between Garrard County and Pulaski County was rained out at West Jessamine and rescheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday. Foul weather delayed the rematch of last year’s regional final, in which Garrard won its first regional title with a 16-4 romp.

The baseball tournament at Pulaski County got in both semifinals, despite threatening skies at the start of the evening. Danville and Somerset advanced to the title game, which is also at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Danville defeated Southwestern 2-0 in eight innings in a compelling game that might have gone the other way if Southwestern pinch-runner Tyler Johnson hadn’t been called out for missing third base when he appeared to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. Two errors helped the Admirals push across their two runs in the eighth.

Somerset trounced McCreary Central 13-2 despite being behind for most of the game. McCreary took a 2-0 lead in the first inning that stood up until the Briar Jumpers scored nine runs in the sixth, all with two outs.
