Commercial break

Several e-mails and letters come across my desk every day. As I was scouring through them, I figured I will post some of those here for more visibility.

Golf Tour Book

Received a packet from the American Lung Association, which sells the “Kentucky Golf Tour Book” for avid golfers in the state.
I received a complimentary copy of the book and use it throughout the summer. The offers discounts for courses in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and five other states. Winchester’s own Southwind Golf Course and Cassell Creek Golf Course are listed in the book.
The books can be purchased for $35 each or four for $105, which is part of the buy three get one free package. It’s a bargain for golfers looking for big discounts.

Verizon Wireless

I’m currently using a Motorola Droid, which features numerous applications. The phone introduced me to the world of touch and go, and I love the service. I recommend Verizon to those who are searching for a wireless provider.

Play ball!

Aaron Frye caught my ceremonial first pitch during Opening Day of Little League baseball.

One of my favorite events to cover in the spring is the Opening Day of Little League baseball at Lykins Park.
The Wall of Fame ceremony, which honors those who have put their share of blood, sweat and tears to make the program successful in Winchester. The league also puts together a parade to coincide with opening day.
This year was a special treat because I was one of five who threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Before you ask, yes, I did get the ball over the plate and it was high and a ball.
Each year, the league provides an opportunity for Clark County youngsters to grow and nourish their skills on the baseball diamond. The little league program in Winchester celebrated its 50th anniversary four years ago and is one year away from the 55th season.
Kudos to the players, parents, volunteers and others who make the league a success.

Think before you drink

I turned 39 last weekend. I have never been drunk and it’s not a state of mind that interests me. Drinking a beer just isn’t something that I do for recreation or during a social get-together. I prefer a diet coke, iced tea or water. In addition, I don’t drink coffee, but I do drink too much soda, a major weakness. I understand I’m in a minority, but that’s OK.
Drinking is a personal preference. It’s not mine and here’s one example why.
While walking on Bourbon Street in New Orleans just last month, a young man stumbled out of a bar, passed out and hit his head on the side walk as he was leaving a bar. He was unconscious and out of his mind. That’s one reason I prefer not to get involved with drinking.
Drinking a “cold one” isn’t for me, but those who choose to do so, need to remember that drinking alcohol requires some responsibility. In the past week, a high school senior was killed while on spring break after falling from a balcony during a spring break trip to Palm Beach, Fla. According to police, he was drunk at the tender age of 17. The young man signed with Notre Dame and was a football prospect. His life ended suddenly and quickly allegedly because he had too much to drink.
The young man likely succumbed under peer pressure and didn’t realize the responsibility involved when it comes to drinking an alcoholic beverage.
Just last weekend, University of Kentucky assistant men’s basketball coach rod Strickland was arrested for an apparent DUI after he ran a red light and nearly hit another vehicle. Strickland wasn’t in the proper state of mind to be driving an automobile and should have never gotten behind the wheel. Strickland could have harmed another driver or himself while apparently intoxicated.
Both incidents should serve as a reminder to simply think before you drink.

Video has been posted on youtube. Check out the link to Vaught’s Views for more details. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Coach K catches Rupp

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and late Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp have one thing common: Both coaches have won four national titles.
Krzyzewski, known as “Coach K,” tied Rupp after the Blue Devils defeated Butler in the NCAA championship game Monday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. The Duke coach won back-to-back titles in 1991-92 and again in 2001, before winning it all again Monday night. Rupp won championships in consecutive fashion (1948-49), added another crown in 1951 and a fourth one in 1958.
Although Duke and Krzyzewski aren’t highly-respected by many around the Bluegrass, it’s hard to ignore the impact Krzyzewski has had in college basketball throughout his career. In his three decades — all at one school — Krzyzewski has elevated the Blue Devils’ program to new heights, while competing against North Carolina for the same amount of respect while playing alongside the Tar Heels in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
In an era of short-termed tenures, Krzyzewski has proved that longevity and loyalty still count.

Cats vs. Duke, Butler

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils will take on Butler in the NCAA championship tonight in Indianapolis.

How has Kentucky fared against national finalists Duke and Butler? The Wildcats have never lost to the Bulldogs in four tries. Kentucky’s last contest against Butler came in 1983 when the Wildcats rolled to a 90-53 at Rupp Arena in 1983.
In the only meeting between the two teams in Indianapolis in 1936, Kentucky came away with a 39-28 win over the Bulldogs.
Although Kentucky doesn’t have much history against Butler, it does have plenty when it comes to playing Duke.
The Wildcats are 11-8 all-time against the Blue Devils and defeated the Blue Devils 86-82 in the last meeting between the two teams in 1998 in the NCAA Tournament during Kentucky’s path to its seventh national championship. Read the rest of this entry »

Pick ‘em: Final Four

And then there were four, soon to be two.
This year’s final four features a pair of surprises in West Virginia and hometown favorite Butler, which returned to Indianapolis with a ticket to the Final Four in hand.
The Bulldogs are labeled as a Cinderella, but it shouldn’t be a surprise Butler is one of four teams in line to win it all this season.
Standing in Butler’s way is Michigan State, which reached the Final Four for the second season in a row. I’m a Tom Izzo fan, but I also like Butler. This one is a hard one, but someone has to lose.
I’ll take the Bulldogs, 78-74.
It’s been a while since West Virginia has been this far in the NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers had to climb over a mountain to beat top-seeded Kentucky last weekend at the Carrier Dome.
Duke was the only top seed to reach the national semifinals. The Blue Devils won’t be an easy team to beat. I like West Virginia in this one, but I’m afraid Duke might be a tad better.
Make it Duke 69, West Virginia 58.
