I’m against playing sports of any kind on Sunday. I don’t even mow my lawn on Sunday. It’s my personal preference and my own conviction. I also found room to be myself.
Of course I was raised in an era that found room for God, sports, recreation and family. All four provided a healthy balance during the days of my youth. As a family, we found time for each other and weren’t distracted. Now it seems like sports from basketball, football, baseball to soccer are played year round. If playing for the youth leagues isn’t enough, we now have AAU and traveling teams. If playing for the high school team isn’t enough, we now have AAU basketball in the summer. Back in the day, going to team camp for a couple of weeks was enough. Again, I’m not against trying to be the best, but I am against too much physical activity.
I’m not against athletes trying to excel and performing at the top level, but against doing it at all costs. The expense is less family time at home, less time to focus on church and less time being a child or teenager.
It seems like the youth of today have little wiggle room to enjoy life. Why not step back, take a deep breath and relax. Life only happens once.
