Montgomery County and George Rogers Clark have been rivals since the beginning of time, but the Indians pushed the rivalry aside during their game against Mason County last week in Mount Sterling.
Montgomery County coach Dan Gooch said the players observed a moment of silence and wore the No. 8 on their helmets in memory of Clark senior wide receiver Mykal Barnes, who died last week from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident.
Gooch said the Indians plan to honor Barnes again Friday night when the two teams meet in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in Mount Sterling and offered his condolences.
“That has got to be tough on the players and coaches,” Gooch said. “I can’t imagine having to go through that.”
Bourbon County also honored Barnes prior to its game last week against Estill County in Paris and the players wore the No. 8 on their helmets.

I am very impressed by these young teams’ compassion and sportmanship. It says a lot about their maturity and their understanding that there are many things more important than a game. Kudos to these young people and their families.
