It’s (almost) football time in the Bluegrass!

It’s (almost) football time in the Bluegrass.
Although Kentucky’s season opener isn’t until Sept. 2 at Louisville, the prep season begins Friday night. I will be covering the George Rogers Clark at Corbin game in Corbin, with a trip to Sonny’s Barbecue on the agenda. It will be the first time in 13 seasons a different coach will be on the sidelines for the Cardinals as Steven Collins makes his debut.
I spent some time with Collins earlier this week and be looking for an extended preview on the team later this week that will be published in The Winchester Sun.
As always, the Kentucky-Louisville contest promises to be interesting and entertaining. Although usually not an indicator for the rest of the year, the contest does have high stakes and could set the tone for the rest of the season for both teams. I’ve always been in favor of this game being the season opener for both teams. The series began that way and should remain the same as long as the two programs continue play each other.
Keep your eye on Eastern Kentucky, which has the best team Dean Hood has assembled since he’s been at the school. The Colonels were ranked No. 18 in the first FCS poll released earlier this week.
One of Kentucky’s opponents this season is Western Kentucky. I like the idea of the Wildcats playing an in-state school each season, but the Hilltoppers and Colonels should be playing each other each year and both schools should be doing what it takes to make that happen. No excuses.
