Jodie Meeks talks to the media after scoring 46 points at Freedom Hall Saturday at Freedom Hall in Louisville.
LOUISVILLE – To put it all in perspective, not many players have scored 40 points or more in a Kentucky uniform.
Jodie Meeks joined the elite club when he tallied 46 points in the Cats’ 93-69 win over Appalachian State Saturday at Freedom Hall in Louisville.
Meeks became the first Kentucky player to net more than 40 points at Freedom Hall and the single-game tally ranks sixth in the school’s all-time list.
Indeed the feat is so rare on any ocassion, not many coaches have witnessed a player score more than 40 points in a single game. The feat was a first for Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie.
What did the Kentucky coach think of the feat?
“It was something else. He played great. I never had a guy score that many points on one of my teams. He was on fire and the guys did a good job of getting him the ball. He got some easy baskets at the beginning of the game and that made him feel good. He hit most of his foul shots. It was an unbelievable performance.”
Meeks credited his teammates for playing a role in the feat:
“It is a good feeling to get 46 points and I give credit to my teammates for finding me. I didn’t know how many points I had until I made a free throw and had 38 points. When I found out, I didn’t want to force shots and I wasn’t concerned with records. I had a good idea that I was hot. When you have that feeling you have to do what you have been doing all game. I had to try to keep taking open shots and try to knock them down. I was trying not to force shots. My teammates were looking for me, and were actually telling me to keep shooting. I don’t care about scoring 40 or 50 points every game, but when your teammates are telling you to keep shooting, it’s hard not to.”
Ramon Harris wasn’t surprised with Meeks’ effort.
“I see Jodie Meeks do that in practice every day, and I’m not surprised he had a big game. He has reached another milestone and it will be interesting to see what he does for the rest of the year.”
Quote of the day:
“I appreciate the fans because they have supported me since the incident. They have told me they have been praying for me, and that is a blessing”

Early Christmas?
“It feels great. When you have a tradition that Kentucky has it is a great honor to score that many points. I will cherish this moment; Christmas is coming up so maybe this is an early Christmas present. The main thing for me is to get a win and getting to share it with my teammates.”
