UK Football: Max Smith is the guy

When Kentucky takes on Louisville in its season opener in less than two weeks, Maxwell Smith will be behind center.
Smith was named the team’s starter Monday and won the job over backup signal caller Morgan Newton. A year ago, the job was Newton’s before the season began, but an injury forced Newton to the sideline during the later part of the season, giving Smith an opportunity.
It’s no surprised the Kentucky football coach Joker Phillips and his staff chose Smith to open the season as the team’s starting quarterback. Phillips said during an interview earlier this summer that Smith would likely get the nod.
“If we played today, no doubt, Max would be our guy,” Phillips said then. “If we played a month from now, he would be our guy. Morgan and (Patrick Towles) will get an opportunity. It’s only fair that we give all those guys an opportunity.”
It’s apparent that Smith was ready for battle when fall drills began earlier this month.
