Vinny Zollo pulling for Cards in state tournament

Western Kentucky freshman Vinny Zollo won’t be watching the George Rogers Clark boys basketball team compete in the state tournament tonight, but he will be keeping track of the Cardinals as he prepares for the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville.
Zollo and the Hilltoppers defeated Mississippi Valley State 59-58 in the first game of the Big Dance Tuesday night at the Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio. Western will take on overall top seed Kentucky at 6:50 p.m. Thursday night in Louisville.
Following the win over Mississippi Valley State, Zollo praised his former coach Scott Humphrey and teammates at Clark, who won their second straight 10th Region title last week to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second year in a row.
“I talked to coach Humphrey the night before our (Sun Belt) conference final, which was the night of their regional final game,” he said. “I talked to him about the ride they’ve been through and I keep up with them as much as possible, because our schedules are so hectic and I haven’t gotten a chance to see them play yet. Those guys have had an incredible season. I am so happy for coach Humphrey. I think he’s a guy, who at times, doesn’t get enough credit for what a great coach that he is. (With all of our success) at GRC, you can’t overlook coach Humphrey for that. They have overachieved and I knew they were going to make a great run. I’m surprised they won 30 games, but I’m not. At the same time, I knew they were going to be good.”
