Took a road trip with my wife Rhonda last week and traveled to Mount Airy, N.C. and then ventured to Pennsylvania to visit Hershey and historic Lancaster, which features many Amish townships and villages.
Mount Airy, also known as “Mayberry” in the “Andy Griffith Show,” was a treat and a one-day barrel of fun. Rhonda and I toured the Andy Griffith Museum and then walked downtown and toured a few shops.
Yes, there is a Floyd’s Barber Shop and I sat in the big chair and let Russell Hiatt trim my hair, even though a haircut wasn’t necessary. Hiatt, 88, is a huge basketball fan and likes the Kentucky Wildcats — when they aren’t playing North Carolina. He’s a fan of Tubby Smith, who sent him an autographed basketball. He likes John Calipari and is waiting on an autographed ball from Coach Cal. I told him that I would see what I could do about that.
Hiatt is the barber the show based character Floyd the barber on during the Andy Griffith Show during it’s successful run. The visit turned out to be a real treat. Hiatt is a Hall of Fame barber and he told Rhonda and I jokes and shared laughs while he “trimmed a little off the top.” It’s not very often that a Hall of Famer stands behind the chair to trim your hair.
Like Mayberry, Mount Airy is a small town and even has a Snappy Lunch, mentioned a time or two during the show. For lunch, I had a world famous pork chop sandwich. We visit Wally’s Filling Station and toured a replica of the courthouse, located next to Wally’s.
It was a fun one-day venture for Rhonda and I, two big fans of the Any Griffith Show.
The visit to Hershey was full of chocolate and was also a fun adventure. We toured Chocolate World and took a trolley tour of the city. The story of Hershey’s is more than just about chocolate. It’s about giving back to the community and treating others as you would like to be treated.
We had dinner at the Bird-in-Hand Restaurant in Lancaster County and really enjoyed our buffet meal, which had a variety of amish meals and deserts. The oatmeal pie was awesome and was indeed a one-of-a-kind desert. Tried to sample everything, but it turned out to be way too much to handle in one visit.

During our trek through Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, I used the Casio G’zOne Commando by Verizon Wireless to keep me from getting lost. It did the trick and was very helpful when it comes to traveling. I would recommend it to anyone on the go and on the road!
